A malware attack has infected two popular apps with over 11 million downloads in the Google Play Store. Tens of thousands of Android devices are probably affected; users should act quickly now for their safety.
Google Play Store: 2 apps infected by malware
Two apps in the Google Play Store have been infected with the Necro Trojan. Wuta Camera Nice Shot Always and Max Browser-Private & Security are affected apps.
Max Browser has over 1 million downloads and has since been removed from the Play Store. Wuta Camera, on the other hand, has over 10 million downloads and is still available for Android. However, the developers have announced that the Trojan has been removed from version 6.3.7.138.
The Necro Trojan already appeared 5 years ago, but the new version is now said to be more difficult to detect.
The malware can hide in the code of regular apps and cause unwanted downloads of other malicious files and applications that can, among other things, exert control over the device and spy on users
Trojans in Android apps: What you can do now
Users of the apps Wuta Camera Nice Shot Always and Max Browser-Private & Security should uninstall the apps immediately. However, they should check which app version is installed on their Android device. If you have installed an older version of the apps but want to continue using them, you should update them as soon as possible.
With regard to alternative app stores, users need to be extremely careful anyway, as apps offered there are often not adequately checked for viruses. Applications should only ever be downloaded from official sources, not from opaque platforms.
